I just uploaded my first youtube video! In it, I explain that I did this painting for someone’s birthday and a little bit of the thought process that went into the ideation of this watercolor painting. Things like the relationship between the two characters, and how I haven’t seen many Chinese Water Dragon and mermaid combos.

Also, I recorded the video on my three-year-old One Plus One (ancient in phone years!) and for some reason, it recorded half of the clips in portrait and half in landscape mode. This resulted in blurriness on the sections that had to be rotated and scaled up. Still not sure how that happened, seeing as the phone was on a stand and didn’t really move. Interestingly, it was every other clip…. If someone knows the solution to this, please let me know! Maybe a way to lock it into landscape mode? Mine seems to only be able to lock in portrait.

Anyway, after each painting, I always analyze to see what needs to be improved. The biggest issue with this painting was that I used too much water when mixing my paints, which resulted in the colors not being vibrant enough. Not enough pigment.

I also used masking tape to prevent the paper from buckling, but masking tape is a little too strong and can some times tear the painting (like at the top edge). Maybe I need to wait until it dries some more? More likely, I need to get some other tape.

Learn from my mistakes! And please share any tips you may have to offer!
